Whether a Licence Is Always Needed
Many care assistant jobs list having a full clean driving licence as an essential requirement for community or home care work, travelling between clients. Most live-in care or residential care home jobs are non-driving roles.
What Full Clean Licence Means
A full clean licence means the holder has a full driving licence and has not received any fixed penalty points for traffic offences. A full Irish driving license means a license issued in respect of categories for full licenses as outlined by the Road Safety Authority for relevant license categories for new applicants and existing license holders respectively.
Own Car or Company Vehicle
Some employers provide a company vehicle to carry out work visits. Others require the candidate to use their own car. If the candidate does use their own car for work, they must check with their car insurance provider to ensure the policy covers use for business purposes. This is different to standard social and domestic use. The candidate’s car must also be up to date with NCT tests.
If You Do Not Drive
There are non-driving jobs in care, mainly based in care homes or day care centres where there is no need for travel between clients.
