Fallout, a cult series within the world of videogames
Since its first installment in 1997, Fallout has always been synonymous with hours and hours of gameplay, open worlds with hundreds of side missions and a wealth of content. Although the first titles in the franchise were developed by the Interplay studio and were presented with a classic isometric view since Bethesda Softworks took the franchise’s reins with Fallout 3, the game has been presented in a more current first-person view.
Behind the brand new Fallout 4 is the same team responsible for the acclaimed third installment and the fantasy-set RPG series The Elder Scrolls. Like the latter, Fallout is a game with a non-linear story and that is intended for a single player.

A post-apocalyptic world that seems to be alive
Another key element of the Fallout series is the great post-apocalyptic world in which each installment is set. And is that unlike other titles with similar characteristics, Fallout stands out for the credibility of its setting despite being a fictional story. This atmosphere borrows many influences from science fiction stories or movies like Mad Max. Although all the installments have elements in common, it is unnecessary to have played all the titles to enjoy the experience.
The Fallout 4 story is set in post-apocalyptic Boston in 2287, two centuries after a nuclear war wiped out most of life on Earth. After leaving the nuclear shelter, the player must survive in the Wasteland, a world populated by dangerous mutant creatures and dominated by four warring factions. All this without counting the hundreds of characters with which the player can interact, all of them with their own personal history.
‘Crafting’ and settlements: The main novelties of Fallout 4
Fallout 4 incorporates a deep new item creation system that allows the player to modify weapons and armor. Each item comprises a series of materials that the player can disassemble to customize on the crafting table. This option gives a lot of depth to the game, making it more interesting to search the scenes in search of objects, but its use is not mandatory. There are still classic stores where you can buy the material.
Likewise, it also reminds Minecraft of the new possibility of building settlements. This option allows the player to make their house, decorate it to the last detail and, finally, protect it with all kinds of security devices.
An app for a more immersive experience
For a couple of years, most major releases have incorporated the possibility of downloading an app for mobile devices that allows you to play with a second screen; Fallout 4 is no exception. The ‘Companion App’ for this title is available on iOS and Android and, after synchronizing it with the game, it is responsible for using the mobile phone or a tablet to show additional information, from statistics, maps and access to the radio stations of the game, even minigames. The app shows the same visual aspect as the visor worn by the character’s character, making the experience more immersive.
To all this, those who have acquired the collector’s version of the game will be able to insert their mobile into the accessory in the shape of a life-size Pip-Boy.
Sales “records” in its first week on sale
The launch of Fallout 4 has been a great success considering the data released by the game’s publisher within days of going on sale. According to Bethesda Softworks, 12 million units have been distributed worldwide, which would be equivalent to sales of 750 million dollars. However, this data should not be confused with the sales figures for units sold, which are surely well below. We will have to wait for the official sales data to verify the real success of the game.
Where there are no doubts is when it comes to talking about simultaneous players. Thus, Fallout 4 has registered the record of having up to 470,000 concurrent players on the Steam platform.
